Safeguarding, Welfare and Wellbeing
At Syon Manor College, the safety, welfare and wellbeing of every student is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to providing a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where young people can learn, develop and achieve their full potential.
We recognise that effective safeguarding extends beyond protecting students from harm. It includes promoting their physical and mental health, supporting their emotional wellbeing, encouraging positive relationships, and helping them develop the skills and resilience needed to thrive both within college and beyond.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and we work proactively to ensure that all students feel safe, valued, respected and listened to.
Our safeguarding commitment
We are committed to:
- Providing a safe, caring and nurturing learning environment.
- Promoting the welfare, wellbeing and personal development of all students.
- Protecting young people from abuse, neglect, exploitation, radicalisation, harassment and discrimination.
- Encouraging students to speak openly about concerns and ensuring they know where to access help and support.
- Promoting positive behaviour, mutual respect and inclusion.
- Tackling bullying in all its forms, including cyberbullying, prejudice-based bullying and discriminatory behaviour.
- Supporting students to stay safe online and develop responsible digital behaviours.

- Working collaboratively with parents, carers and external agencies to secure the best outcomes for students.
How we keep students safe
We maintain robust safeguarding arrangements and follow statutory guidance to ensure the highest standards of student protection.
Our safeguarding measures include:
- A dedicated and experienced safeguarding team led by trained Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs).
- Regular safeguarding and child protection training for all staff.
- Clear procedures for reporting, recording and responding to concerns.
- Rigorous safer recruitment practices, including enhanced DBS checks and appropriate vetting procedures.
- Ongoing risk assessment and monitoring of student welfare.
- Strong partnerships with local authorities, social care services, health professionals, police and other safeguarding agencies.
- A culture where safeguarding concerns are identified early and acted upon promptly.
All staff, volunteers, governors and visitors are expected to share our commitment to safeguarding and to report any concerns immediately.
Mental health and wellbeing
We understand that good mental health is fundamental to academic success, personal development and overall wellbeing. Our college is committed to supporting students’ emotional and mental wellbeing through:
- Access to pastoral support and wellbeing services.
- Early identification of students who may need additional support.
- Signposting to specialist services where appropriate.
- Promoting resilience, self-confidence and positive mental health.
- Creating an environment where students feel comfortable seeking help and support.
We encourage students to talk to trusted adults and seek support whenever they need it.
Working in partnership with parents and carers
We value the vital role parents and carers play in safeguarding young people. Effective safeguarding is achieved through strong partnerships between home and college. We aim to work openly and collaboratively with families wherever possible. However, where there are concerns that a student may be at risk of harm, the college has a legal duty to act in accordance with safeguarding procedures and may need to involve external agencies.
Listening to students
We believe that every student has the right to be heard and taken seriously. Students are encouraged to speak to any member of staff if they have concerns about themselves, another student or any aspect of college life. We are committed to responding to concerns sensitively, appropriately and without delay.
At Syon Manor College, safeguarding is more than a statutory duty, it is a commitment to protecting, nurturing and championing every young person in our college community. We are dedicated to ensuring that all students have the security, support and opportunities they need to thrive both during their time with us and in their future lives.
We support all students by:
- Providing a caring, safe, and positive environment within the college
- Encouraging communication, self-esteem, and self-assertiveness
- Effectively tackling bullying and harassment
- Promoting all aspects of the Equality Act 2010
- Training all staff in Child Protection and Safeguarding to the appropriate level and ensuring they are aware of safeguarding procedures within our college
- Providing the infrastructure for effective reporting, record keeping, and working in partnership
We expect all staff and visitors to our college to behave in a way which ensures our children are safeguarded at all times. This includes a duty for any safeguarding concerns to be reported to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL).
